DIY-Japanese

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

i was watching japan hour
amused on how a petite smooth skin lady
gleefully looking at the giant octopus
all ten tentacles very much alive

she could devour the entire sea population
and still look graceful on screen

so i had to make my way to the supermarket
at ten pm to buy myself

a slab of raw salmon
a tube of wasabe
a bottle of light soy sauce
a pack of seaweed

pan seared for crispy skin
half a cucumber thinly sliced

all i need for a low profile saturday night.

We’ve all seen/heard/read/purchased/queued/criticized/tradedsoul for that ‘i’m-not-a-plastic-bag’ bag, now here’s the sequel to the former over-publicized affair.

This time, I dare say I WANT ONE.

dineondesign

Potentially the most brilliant design (/fusion/food/art/omgican’tbelievei’mnotthere) project of the season. I’m not sure who are the creative geniuses behind it but it was held at Monkey Town — which started out as a seasonal dining and performance art space.

I might have missed out on that certain table reservation many are dead envious about but ferran adria is not likely to retire anytime soon. Not being in New York however for this one kicks me hard on the arse.

Read that they are staging it again, this time on my homeground - Singapore.

Again, I wouldn’t be around for it.
Come to London guys, this way please!!

Greece in a Menu

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

A spontaneous weekend lead me to a full blown gastronomical meal up in the mountains where the mythical Zeus lies embedded. Here’s how to eat with the Gods:

Hop on a bus from Istanbul. Never mind if your original plan is to be in Alexandrapolis, just pay the bus driver an extra 50 euros, to get to somewhere you have no clue about. Then check into an internet cafe and read (and find your accommodation). Discover that you’re in the second largest city in Greece, welcome to ThessalonĂki.

thessaloniki

Ask the locals. Ask your hotel receptionist even though he looks like he has buried someone in one of the dogdy rooms. We did, and he told us to make our way to Mount Olympus. An hour later…

How to eat chicken breast as a dessert

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Have a kazandibi - one of turkish many sweetened delights. If you wonder where is the chicken breast, it’s all mashed up and perfectly blended into one gooey mold. Looks can be deceiving..

Ayva

I decided to expand my vocab for Turkish desserts beyond ‘delight’ or ‘baklava’ and I found my true love (no. 3454553453th).
Ayva - a traditional Ottoman dessert that derives its sweetness from familiar tropical fruit but what makes it a phenomenon is that signature white gelatine like cream - only those of Turkish blood holds the recipe to such greatness.

Amongst the best, one can be found in Haji Abdullah Restaurant, in Taksim Square - which I had. Smile.

They might be at war but amidst every battle, there will still be love - enclosed in every song, every dish and every gesture.
This is my revolution.
